Start with the question
You may need to identify potential heirs or investigate a particular family connection. We agree the scope in writing before work begins.
The core facts
- Full name of the deceased, with any former names
- Date and place of death, and date of birth if known
- Last known address, and earlier addresses if you have them
- Marital history, and any children, wherever they are now
- Whether there is a will, and whether a grant has issued
Supporting documents
Tell us which documents are available, such as a will, grant, death certificate or family tree. We will agree how to receive copies securely. Previous research is useful even where its conclusions need checking.
Say what has already been tried
Include previous searches, contact with relatives and any lines of research already explored. This helps us avoid repeating work.
Deadlines and constraints
Include any court deadline or planned distribution date. Let us know if there are circumstances that affect the timing or scope of the work.
What you will receive
Our report sets out the findings, their supporting sources and any unresolved questions. A possible connection is identified as provisional until the evidence supports confirmation.
