If we have contacted you as a potential heir, your entitlement still needs to be confirmed. The guidance below explains the roles and information involved once a beneficiary's position is established.
Who is responsible
The personal representative administers the estate. This may be an executor named in a will or an administrator. They gather the assets, settle debts and taxes, and distribute the remainder.
What you can usually ask for
- Confirmation that you are a beneficiary, and of what kind
- An indication of the stage the administration has reached
- Information about a legacy left specifically to you
- In due course, the estate accounts, where you are entitled to see them
The information you are entitled to depends on your interest in the estate. A solicitor can advise if you are unsure what you can request.
Why estates take time
Administration may involve valuing or selling property, settling tax, resolving claims and tracing relatives. You can ask the personal representative for an update on progress.
Where the Register fits
Our role is to research and record family connections. The personal representative handles estate administration and distribution. If you have received a letter from us, we can explain the enquiry and any checks still needed.
When to take advice
A solicitor can advise on disputed entitlement, concerns about estate administration or other questions affecting your rights. This guide is general information, not advice on a particular estate.
